Marty Mull

At age 9, Marty Mull began his competitive swimming career. One year later he
set his first National Record in the 25 freestyle. Over the next three years,
Marty went on to set 3 additional National Age Group Records.

At the age of 13, Marty placed 6th in the 1650 Freestyle Open event at the
YMCA National Championships in Omaha, NE.

In the fall of 1956, Marty began his illustrious career as a high school
swimmer at McKinley High School. During those for years he became, arguably
the greatest High School swimmer the State of Ohio had ever produced.

During his four years, Mull was a member of 4 District Championship Teams, 4
State Championship Teams, earned 4 Varsity Letters, earned All American honors
4 years and never lost an individual event in dual meets or Championship
Meets.

In District Competition Marty was a perfect 8-8 winning District Championships
in the 200 Free, 200 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay, 100 Free and 200 I.M..

Competing at the State Championships Marty won 7 out of 8 events he swam. His
freshman year he won the 200 Freestyle and was part of McKinley¹s winning 200
Free Relay. During his sophomore year Marty ³sacrificed individual glory² by
swimming two relays, winning the 200 Free Relay and placing second in the 200
Medley Relay. His junior year he won the 200 IM and the 200 Free Relay. His
senior year, Marty won the 200 IM and the 100 Free.

Throughout Marty¹s four years he broke dozens of Team and Pool Records. He
broke every District and State Record in the events he swam and broke 5
National Records.

After High School graduation Marty went on the The Ohio State University where
he lettered each year and was named All American all 3 years of Varsity
competition (freshman were not eligible to swim at the Varsity level).

Marty was a member of 1962 NCAA Championship Team at Ohio State.

During his collegiate career Marty never lost a 200 IM race.

In 1962 and 1963 he won NCAA National Championships in the 200 IM. In ¹63 he
set the National Record in the IM.

In 1985 Marty Mull was Enshrined in the inaugural class of the Greater Canton
Aquatics Association Hall of Fame. In 2002 he was Inducted into The Ohio
State University Athletic Hall of Fame and is also a member of The Ohio Swim
Coaches Hall of Fame.
